Rare pair of late 17th Century Japanese powder blue globular vases of small proportions.
This kind of decoration (solid blue background with overglaze gold decoration) is typical of Chinese porcelain.
Japanese potters attempted to replicate it but with less success hence the rarity of this colour scheme. We only had one vase such as these before.
An interesting fact: a leaf of one of the two vases has been painted in green enamel and it was most probably a mistake during the decorating process.
Lamped for UK use with a handmade giltwood base and solid brass fitting; can be easily converted to EU or US

Rare Pair of 17th Century Japanese Arita Powder Blue Vases as Lamps

These handsome large jars and covers are wonderful examples of the grand Chinese porcelains made for export in the Kangxi period(1662-1722)
Decorated in underglaze blue, each panel encloses finely painted plants and flowers, in a distinctive style that uses pencilled hatched lines, recalling European prints of the time. Such wares were eagerly bought, when they reached the West, and used to decorate the public rooms of palaces and the grand country houses of the aristocracy.
They epitomise the Dutch taste, brought to England by King William and Queen Mary, which filled Kensington Palace and Hampton Court with blue and white porcelain.
Large covered jars were often bought in pairs, to stand on the floor in a hall or long gallery, while in the summer months they might have been placed to furnish a large empty fireplace.

Gongshi (Chinese: 供石), also known as scholar's rocks, are naturally occurring or shaped rocks which are traditionally appreciated by Chinese scholars. Like a landscape painting, the rock represented a microcosm of the universe on which the scholar could meditate within the confines of his studio or garden; Although most scholar’s rocks suggest mountain landscapes, these abstract forms may recall a variety of images to the viewer, such as dragons, phoenixes, blossoming plants and even human figures.’ Many factors contribute to the perfect scholar’s rock — or ‘fantastic rocks’ as they were once known — ranging from its geographic origin to the colour and texture of the stone. ‘Rocks of sombre colour are typically appreciated for their sensuous shapes, while rocks of bright colour are generally valued for their massed forms, which best showcase their colours'. A number of terms were created to describe the desired qualities in a scholar’s rock, from shou (meaning thin) to tou (conveying ‘openess’). Hollows in the rock, meanwhile, were prized for their dramatic contrast to the solidity of the stone — and light. A Regency black painted plaster standing female figure light by Humphrey Hopper depicted in classical dress, holding aloft a candle light with etched floral glass shade, on a circular base. The shade replaced. Signed and Dated on the back of the base “N 18-1809” and “H”. Humphrey Hopper (1765-1844) may have started his career as a mason. He completed his education as a mature man of 36 by enrolling in the Royal Academy Schools in February 1801 to study sculpture. He was a successful student, winning a silver medal in December 1802.

The Elbogen porcelain factory was founded on the Austrian / Czech border in 1815 by Rudolf K and Eugen K Haidinger. It was named Haideinger Brothers Porcelain Factory in Elbogen, and was also known as Vienna Porcelain and Earthenware Factory. The factory was located in the Czech city of Loket, which was known as Elbogen whilst under Austrian rule. Like Samson of France, the Elbogen workshops produced a number of designs in the eighteenth century manner inspired by Chinese and European models.

A spectacular large Chinese porcelain powder blue temple jar and cover, early 18th century, Kangxi. Beautiful soft blue glaze. Minor damage: Lid has a small restored edge chip. The vase also has a restored section on the rim of about 2 inches and there is a circular crack on the shoulder of about 2.5 inches. There is a slight tonal differential between the lid and the vase. Overall in good and decorative condition.

A great pair of well cast and chased French Louis XVI fire dogs with the typical neoclassic elements such as columns, urns and a feathered triumphal helmet each the side. These date from circa 1770. Excellent fire gilding. Very good size and condition, the gilding especially as it is not worn and every element has been finely chased. Originally these fire dogs would have had long iron rods emerging from the reverse side. These have been removed at some stage and now allow for easy placing on the side of all fireplaces.

A very large Japanese Imari vase of exceptional decorative quality dating from, circa 1700-1720. Each of the three main panels on the body of the vase depicts different varieties of flowers such as peonies, carnations and chrysanthemums. The lid is a European copy of the original made to replace the, presumably, broken, original. We think it was made in the early 19th century and we assume that the vase must have had a prestigious provenance considering the cost of making a lid to match in such quality. The vase stands on an associated 20th century hand-carved and gilt wooden base.

A pair of large Chinese Export reverse glass portrait pictures, one panel depicting a woman of rank, the other her husband, probably a dignitary in their original frames. Their scale is unusually large and are exceptionally fine. The pictures retain their original moulded frames together with their pierced bronze hanging plates. However they are in ‘country house’ condition. The delicate technique of painting behind hand moulded glass panels renders them vulnerable to the hand of time. There are many areas where the paint has lifted from the glass.

This very tall and impressive octagonal shaped Imari vase depicts two unfolded screens with a landscape and architecture decoration and on top of it a rich pelmet-like fabric ending in a beautiful drapery on each side of the screen. The vase is in very good conditions, has been restored inly on the inside to secure some hairline cracks that dont go through the body. An identical example is shown in Wilhemsthal House, Germany, inv. nr. 4.1926.

We were happy to come across this vase as there are very few surviving examples like this due to the medium’s delicate nature. It is a Japanese Imari vase that, instead of being overglaze painted with the popular imari 5 colours palette, has been covered with beautiful layers of lacquer depicting peonies. Sadly it is not in very good conditions, pieces missing and circa 25% of the total area has been restored very badly. We offer it as a decoration/collector piece for those able to understand its rarity and charm.

Plum Blossom (Prunus) / Meihua : Plum Meihua is one of the most important plants in Chinese art. Large Kangxi mark on the base, beautiful scrolling foliage decoration on the front. Good condition: a chip the size of a thumbnail expertly restored on the side and not visible in both of them.

Rare English Georgian satinwood cutlery box with painted decoration. This style was developed by T. Sheraton and very rare to find in a cutlery box which is usually mahogany. Sheraton is a neoclassical style characterized by delicate straight lines, light construction, contrasting veneers, and neoclassical motifs and ornamentation. It is named for English designer Thomas Sheraton who published his designs in “The Cabinet Makers and Upholsterers Drawing Book” in 1791. It was the most reproduced style in the United States during the Federal period.

This large Japanese porcelain charger dating circa 1700 features an unusual decoration: there is no under glaze blue as usually found in the Imari palette but the background is painted over glaze with a layer of black enamel: The result is very eye catching. This charger is particularly deep, has got big spur marks on the back (a sign of being early). Condition: There is a hairline crack of about 8 cm at h 11 that is displayed in picture nr 6. Rare object.

An impressively large mid-18th century carved giltwood mirror in the Rococo style. The later shaped divided twin plate surmounted by a pierced acanthus leaf cresting flanked by icicles, the pierced ‘C’@ scroll sides with trailing oak leaves and acorns, above a pierced rocaille, double ‘C’ scroll and acanthus carved apron below. This mirror has excellent detailing and superb crisp carving throughout; the gilt finish has nicely aged to present a superb centrepiece mirror for any room or hallway. Origin/Age: Probably Irish, George III, circa 1760.

The evident charm of this sitter is characteristic of the work of Sir Godfrey Kneller and his studio, most probably Edward Byng. Edward Byng (circa 1676–1753) trained as an artist and became an assistant to Godfrey Kneller, circa 1693. At the time of Kneller’s death in 1723 Byng was his chief assistant and lived with him at a house in Great Queen Street. Kneller’s will recorded that Byng had “for many years faithfully served me”, gave him a pension of £100 a year and entrusted him with seeing that Kneller’s unfinished work was completed, for which he would receive the outstanding payments.

This large Japanese Imari vase, dating from circa 1700, features an unusual decoration depicting two large quails perching on a tree branch on a blue background with hexagons panels depicting butterflies and stylized flowers. A fine pair of early 18th century Japanese porcelain models of a carp leaping the Lungmen Falls, Arita Kilns, circa 1730-1750. Made from a two-piece mould, the tail and fins were made separately and luted to the body. The carp is depicted in a dynamic pose bent at the tail forcing the body upwards, open mouthed with it`s Barbles pushed back to it`s eyes it is clearly struggling. It is decorated in underglaze blue, pale iron-oxide, red and gold. For similar examples: Christies London, Sale 12445, 6/07/2016, lot 9.

A fine pair of early 18th century Japanese richly decorated imari baluster vases. Lamped on hand-carved and water gilt wooden bases. Both vases have been fitted with antiqued brass plates and adjustable height dual fittings with finals. The vases are decorated in two separate panels and a border painted with chrysanthemums. The panels show carps in a stream and a phoenix or bird of paradise in the other. Typical imari colours: Tomato red, blue, black, orange and gilt highlights. One of the vases has some craquelure on the glaze surface.
