A Tall late 17th Century Japanese Octagonal Arita Blue and White Vase circa 1680. The vase is of octagonal baluster form, boldly painted with phoenixes and large blossoming intricate foliage of hydrangea and peonies rocks and branches around the body within stylised borders. Good dark blue colours, excellent loose decoration stylistically typical of this period and in excellent condition. a chip on the rim of about 3 cm has been professionally restored.

A very realistically modelled pair of white porcelain elephants on ormolu bases. Maison Samson, Paris, circa 1900. A similar, although slightly larger, example in: Mallett, 2010 catalogue, pag.26 : Visite Privee, Hotels Particuliers de Paris, pag. 91 : The collection of the late Duchess of Devonshire. A charming pair of early 18th century Dutch Delft blue and white vases, Lamped. The bulbous long neck vases finely painted in underglaze blue. Depicting Chinese courtiers in a rocky landscape. Holland, circa 1720. Several comparable example at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, Holland. Lamped and mounted on a hand carved and hand gilt wooden base, fitted with antiqued brass plate with UK fittings, brown silk flex and black UK plug. Can be converted for EU or US use. Lampshades are not included.

These handsome large jars and covers are wonderful examples of the grand Chinese porcelains made for export in the Kangxi period(1662-1722) Decorated in underglaze blue, each panel encloses finely painted plants and flowers, in a distinctive style that uses pencilled hatched lines, recalling European prints of the time. Such wares were eagerly bought, when they reached the West, and used to decorate the public rooms of palaces and the grand country houses of the aristocracy. They epitomise the Dutch taste, brought to England by King William and Queen Mary, which filled Kensington Palace and Hampton Court with blue and white porcelain. Large covered jars were often bought in pairs, to stand on the floor in a hall or long gallery, while in the summer months they might have been placed to furnish a large empty fireplace.
