A late 18th century English lead planter. Solid lead in quatrefoil shape with panels showing lion heads and standing on four lion paws. Extremely solid and heavy item to withstand the whims of English weather. The planter has a lovely powder grey patina and is a rare survivor.

The evident charm of this sitter is characteristic of the work of Sir Godfrey Kneller and his studio, most probably Edward Byng. Edward Byng (circa 1676–1753) trained as an artist and became an assistant to Godfrey Kneller, circa 1693. At the time of Kneller’s death in 1723 Byng was his chief assistant and lived with him at a house in Great Queen Street. Kneller’s will recorded that Byng had “for many years faithfully served me”, gave him a pension of £100 a year and entrusted him with seeing that Kneller’s unfinished work was completed, for which he would receive the outstanding payments.

These boxes were ostensibly carried by people taking the waters and have subsequently been named “bath” boxes. The red paint simulating Chinese lacquerware with gilding and ornate cast and chased hinges. Condition commensurate with age and use. Size: 30.5 cm wide, 11 cm deep, 23 cm tall

An early 18 century red lacquered bath box circa 1720 to 1750

This large Japanese porcelain charger dating circa 1700 features an unusual decoration: there is no under glaze blue as usually found in the Imari palette but the background is painted over glaze with a layer of black enamel: The result is very eye catching. This charger is particularly deep, has got big spur marks on the back (a sign of being early). Condition: There is a hairline crack of about 8 cm at h 11 that is displayed in picture nr 6. Rare object.

Rare Late 17th Century Chinese Kangxi ' Famille Verte ' Porcelain Vase

An unusual and large Kangxi (1662-1722) blue and white porcelain charger. circa 1700. Its shape takes inspirations from Dutch 17th century silver, probably the basin of an ewer. Large mushroom shaped kangxi mark at the bottom. Similar examples and literature: Hermitage Museum, saint Petersburg (Arapova,1977, p.122) : Chinese Ceramics in the Topkapi Saray Museum (de krahl/Ayers, 1986, p 1023).
