Gongshi (Chinese: 供石), also known as scholar's rocks, are naturally occurring or shaped rocks which are traditionally appreciated by Chinese scholars. Like a landscape painting, the rock represented a microcosm of the universe on which the scholar could meditate within the confines of his studio or garden; Although most scholar’s rocks suggest mountain landscapes, these abstract forms may recall a variety of images to the viewer, such as dragons, phoenixes, blossoming plants and even human figures.’ Many factors contribute to the perfect scholar’s rock — or ‘fantastic rocks’ as they were once known — ranging from its geographic origin to the colour and texture of the stone. ‘Rocks of sombre colour are typically appreciated for their sensuous shapes, while rocks of bright colour are generally valued for their massed forms, which best showcase their colours'. A number of terms were created to describe the desired qualities in a scholar’s rock, from shou (meaning thin) to tou (conveying ‘openess’). Hollows in the rock, meanwhile, were prized for their dramatic contrast to the solidity of the stone — and light. A large early 18th century Dutch Delft blue and white octagonal vase, Lamped. Depicting Chinese courtiers, one of which riding a battle horse, in a rocky landscape. Several comparable example at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, Holland. Lamped and mounted on a hand carved and hand gilt wooden base, fitted with antiqued brass plate with UK fittings, brown silk flex and black UK plug. Can be converted for EU or US use. Lampshades are not included.

A fine pair of early 18th century Japanese richly decorated imari baluster vases. Lamped on hand-carved and water gilt wooden bases. Both vases have been fitted with antiqued brass plates and adjustable height dual fittings with finals. The vases are decorated in two separate panels and a border painted with chrysanthemums. The panels show carps in a stream and a phoenix or bird of paradise in the other. Typical imari colours: Tomato red, blue, black, orange and gilt highlights. One of the vases has some craquelure on the glaze surface.

A Fine Pair of Early 18th Century Lamped Imari Vases on Gilt Bases

A George II games table, circa 1750, constructed from good quality solid mahogany. The table follows a typical form of the period with bold cabriole legs terminating on elegant proud standing pad feet. One leg swings open to support the top, which has candle stands and guinea or counter trays as well as a card drawer which is oak lined with a later handle. The table has good original pagination which means that there are colour differences throughout. Most notably the top has a mellow golden hue whilst the legs retain a darker colour.
